Cataract Operations dedicated to H.R.H. the Princess Mother on her Birthday 2010 (30 Nov 10)
Dr. Riksh Syamananda, Member of the Board of Mae Fah Luang Foundation presided over the opening ceremony for the Cataract Operation at Nan Hospital, Nan Province.
On the occasion of the 110th Birthday of H.R.H. the Princess Mother on 21 October 2010, Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage in cooperation with the Royal initiative Discovery Foundation, the Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer Foundation, the Ophthalmologic Society of Thailand, Chiang Rai Prachanuhroh Hospital, and Nan Hospital performed operations on cataract patients. A total of 143 patients (145 eyes) were operated on, from 22-24 October 2010, at the Nan Hospital.
Mr. Huan Hanmee, a patient who received cataract operations on both eyes, spoke of his life before coming to the hospital to receive this life-changing procedure: “I really couldn't see well prior to this eye operation. I used to fall down often, and I just couldn't help myself ... I did the best I could (with my poor vision) when I was working.” Another patient who also received cataract operations on both eyes, Mr. Sawaang Jaikam, said: “I used to have to walk without being able to see — my wife always had to help me, and when eating, I even had to use my hand to feel around for what food I could put into my mouth.”
The cataract operations, dedicated to Somdej Phra Sri Nagarindra Boromrajajonnani, have been performed since the year 2000 with 1,078 eyes having received the operation, enabling the patients to live a more normal life with the benefit of corrected vision. This is in accordance with the philosophy of H.R.H. the Princess Mother in solving problems by “helping people to help themselves.”
